Terms and Definitions
These terms will aid in a perspective for the work that will follow in relation
Achaemenid: dynasty that took its name from Achaemenes, its founder.
Administrator: a person who administers the affairs of an organisation, official body, etc.
Artefact: something made or given shape by man, such as a tool or work of art, especially an object of archaeological interest.
Battle of Marathon: the Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC, during the first Persian invasion of Greece. It was fought between the citizens of Athens, aided by Plataea, a Persian force. the battle was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia, under King Darius I, to subjugate Greece. The Greek army was decisively defeated the more numerous Persians, marking a turning point in the Greco-Persian wars.
Battle of Salamis: the Battle of Salamis was fought between an Alliance of Greek city-states and the Persian Empire in 480 BC, in the straits between the mainland and Salamis, an island in the Saronic Gulf near Athens. It marked the high-point of the second Persian invasion of Greece, which had begun that spring.
Battle of Thermopylae: the Battle of Thermopylae was fought between an alliance of Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, and the Persian Empire of Xerxes I over the course of three days, during the second Persian invasion of Greece. it took place simultaneously with the naval battle at Artemisium, in August or September 480 BC, at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae.
Comparison: the act of comparing, comparable quality or qualities; likeness.
Corroboration: to confirm or support a statement, facts, opinions, etc., by providing fresh evidence. A corroboratory fact, statement, etc.
Examination: the act of examining; inspection, inquiry, investigation.
Historian: an expert in history; authority on history, a writer of history.
Ineptitude: lacking in fitness or aptitude, unfit. lacking sense or reason, foolish.
Kingship: rule by a king; monarchy. The position or authority of a king, the skill or practice of ruling as a king.
Leader: a guiding or directing head, as of an army, movement or political group.
Myriad: a fighting unit compromising 10,000 men, the largest unit in the Persian army. The Persian army was made of myriads.
Perspective: a way of regarding situations, facts, etc., and judging their relative importance.
Poleis: Greek city-states, the territory of a polis included the town and the surrounding countryside.
Representativeness: one that serves as an example or type for others of the same classification, representing.
Revenge: to exact punishment or expiation for a wrong on behalf of, especially in a resentful or vindictive spirit.
Satrap: a governor of a province under the ancient Persian monarchy, a subordinate ruler.
Tactical: of or pertaining to tactics, especially military or naval tactics, skilful or diplomatic.
Warrior: a person engaged or experienced in warfare; soldier. A person who shows or has shown great vigour, courage or aggressiveness, as in politics or athletics.
